My cardinal tip is to minimise: bring only half of what you think you need. Because if you're a beauty enthusiast (and if you're reading a post on travel make up bags I can only assume you are), you'll be buying enough to supplement whichever options you leave at home. This might seem blatantly obvious, but I apparently did not grasp this concept as well as I thought I did - I packed at least two options for every product I bought, including eyelash glue. Completely unnecessary.
So, what will I be taking on my next holiday?
- Concealer - Maybelline Master Conceal. Bring something blendable and non-cakey so you know you won't have to check on it all day.
- Foundation - Covergirl Superstat 3in1. This is ideal because it is medium to full coverage, easy to apply and stays on all day - perfect for a quick base.
- Primer - L'Oreal Magic Blur. A primer is a must, but hello, go get free samples of the expensive stuff while you're away!
- Eyeshadow - Lorac Pro Palette. Bring anything that has easy to blend shadows and is compact!
- Liquid liner - Stila Stay All Day Waterproof. These felt pens are the quickest and easiest way to create a winged liner look, and won't budge all day. I chose black and periwinkle, for when you want to add a pop of colour.
- Pencil Liner - Rimmel Scandaleyes Kohl Kajal. These won't budge either, the black is great for tightlining, and the taupe colour is perfect for your waterline - I use these daily!
- Mascara - Too Faced Better Than Sex. I know I always have a travel size mascara lying around, which are obviously ideal. If not, bring your full size because chances are you're exhausted while travelling and you're peepers need a pick-me-up.
- Brows - Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade and Benefit Gimme Brow. Maybe two brow products might seem unnecessary for you, but I know that if I use a brow gel after also filling them in I have unstoppable brows - all day long.
- Powder - Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder. If you don't usually powder, skip this altogether. If you do, grab something compact and effective like this one!
- Cheeks - Urban Decay Flushed Palette. This type of palette (blush, bronzer and highlighter) was made for guys and gals who want a full face of make up without bringing three extra products - get your hands on this or something similar!
- Lipstick - Wet n Wild Vamp It Up, Maybelline Superstay 14HR in Perpetual Peony and MAC Diva. This is the area where I brought too many options (18, to be embarrassingly exact); I suggest a nude/pink shade, a red and a darker shade to cover your basic needs!
- Lipbalm - Fresh Sugar Rose Lip Treatment. Flying makes your lips uber dry, so make sure you've got some kind of chapstick situation on hand.
- Lipliner - Urban Decay Ozone. A clear, anti-feathering agent is a traveller's best friend as it matches any colour combo your heart desires. However, if you don't yet own one of these babies, a colour that matches your natural lip colour will work fine!
Note! Brushes tend to vary on what you personally use the most often; personally I'd bring my beauty blender, a fluffy powder brush, dual ended contour brush, angled brow brush, fluffy blending brush and flat shader brush.
The final guideline I'll be following in the future is that if what you bring takes up more than a third of your make up bag, it's too much. Stop what you're doing and reevaluate your life choices, because we all know you're going to fill the rest of the space quicker than you can say spending money.
Hope this serves as a friendly intervention to all of you over-packers out there!
Enjoy!
